Chong’s artistic residency at Thameen is preceded by a glittering decade-plus tenure at celebrated perfume brand Amouage, which led to global success by reshaping the brand’s olfactory identity. Chong has today become a highly respected protagonist, an “enfant terrible” of the world of perfumes, who challenges conventions and pushes artistic boundaries. Chong’s heterodox and multidisciplinary training in Comparative Literature, with specialisation in semiotics and psychoanalysis, and the interpretation of opera have given him the inventive skills to imagine classical and mainstream olfactory styles with unparalleled pioneering talent. As he describes it: “It’s bottling art and emotions.” According to Chong, creating a perfume is always a storytelling process. An inimitable maverick and risk-taker, each creation is a window into his mind, heart and soul.
